Completing the Penguin Random House competition to design a book cover for In Cold Blood - Truman Capote has highlighted that this is an area of deign where my interests lie. This is due to the openness that is available when designing a book cover, it allows for a range of different mediums to be experiment with. This is something that appeals to me as a designer as I am not limited to one style. Therefore the opportunity to experiment with digital illustration, typography and more traditional print designs such as using screen printing, collage and mono printing are all areas that can be explored in response to designing a book jacket. It has also highlighted that have an understanding of the tone of voice of the book as well as having background knowledge of the author are also important when producing an informed and appropriate response.
This is an area of design that I would like to interact further with through competitions and contacting illustrators.designers who work with book jacket design. Getting involved with competitions will built my experience with this area of design as well as allowing time and purpose to practising the skills involved.
