Studio Blup

The talk by Dines from Studio Blup was highly inspiring. It was encouraging to hear someones story who didn't gloss over the negative times that he has been through to become the successful designer that he is today.

Key notes:

- To stand out from the rest, you need a style

- Push a brief with a client and show them what more you can do for them. This gives the designer more exposure as well as demonstrating to clients the other skill sets that you can offer.

- Having a personalised email domain name is important in appearing authentic and professional

- When designing a website/portfolio, it is important to focus on the content and ensure the imagery is strong. The client doesn't want to read large or if any text, it's all about the visuals

These are elements to my design practice that I hope to ensure are present.

Website & Email

Dines expressed the importance of appearing professional when contacting creatives and discussed the increased level of engagement a person may have if they see an email/web address that is personal to the persons practice. Recognising this in the research carried out, I built a website through square space. This decision was informed by carrying out research into different website builders and through talking to peers. This allows for my work to be quickly up on the web and presented in a clean, working manor. The cost of this is something that has been added to my university budget.

The following domain was purchased: www.kathryn-Brown.com
Due to availability the - allows for the domain to still maintain my full name. I did not want to add ‘design’ or ‘creative’ as I felt this my limit my practice. The following email has also been attached to the domain address, hello@kathryn-brown.com. It is important to reflect my professionalism in this way as through feedback it can increase a persons engagement with the email. This is further reinforced by having the signature at the end of an email. The appropriate links to my website and instagram have been included in this. This has been informed by the research carried out -recognition of this being used by other creatives that I have engaged with over email. Having the links present ensures that the receiver has easy access to my website and other accounts where they can view my work.

Personal Branding Research

This focused research helped identify specifics in other peoples branding that my practice would benefit from.

Key Considerations:
- Ensure the branding colours represent my own likes
- A clean simple design that allows the information/content to be the main focus
- Subtle use of colour/shape to provide detail in the design
- Represent the vector style that I often work in

Brief 07. Evaluation

Strengths
Completing this brief reflects my interest in identity based projects. This has also been informed by completing work that celebrates independent businesses. Completing this brief has allowed me to work on a live brief/pitch to a client. This has developed my understanding of reading a client provided brief. This is relevant to my practice as it also reflects the nature of many freelance projects I hope to complete in the future.

Weaknesses
A range of design directions were explored however I felt that the design quality was lacking. This could have been overcome by collaborating with an illustrator however it was a brief that I wanted to fully complete myself. This has helped identify that in my practice it is important to recognise when collaboration is needed and that I do not have to do everything myself.

Time Management
The short time scale of the brief gave sufficient time for research and development. Although more time could always be spent on developing an outcome, the quality and creativity of the outcome did not suffer because of this. The time-frame for the brief meant that the development process was fast paced development process. This tested my creative practice however helped developed a structure when producing a logo design. This is a process that I will be able to apply to future briefs.

Final Outcome
The final outcome represents the nature of the clients business. This brief helped develop presenting work to a client. Through discussions with the team at The Archipelago, the outcome was presented in a clean visual manor to ensure that the audience understand the submission as well as how it would appear when applied to print and digital media

Instagram

One of my illustrations for the 100 Day Challenge was reposted by an artisan bakehouse for dog treats. This was an unproped share however my work was credited. This post increased the number of visits to my page as well as gaining a number of followers.

Brief 02, Evaluation

The brief - To complete a piece of artwork/design each day for 100 days. Each week a new style/technique/design form must be experimented with and documented through Instagram.

After completing 100 pieces and posting them on Instagram, I am able to reflect on the project. This brief has allowed me to engage with a number of different individuals on the social media platform. Creatives such as Buttercrumble have followed me throughout this progress and have commented with their support. I have also gained exposure through other creatives/businesses sharing my posts. This has increased the exposure that my account has and also means my work reaches a wider audience.

Although the aim was to create a piece of artwork each day, this raised its own challenges due to personal commitments. As a result of this, some posts were created ahead of time. This goes against the brief and motivations behind the project, however it did highlight the importance of scheduling work alongside private life. This highlighted the importance of having a work and life balance in my career direction. To perform to at my best creatively, I need time to relax and do my own thing. When searching for a job it is important that the role would allow me time to do this.

As a result of using Adobe Illustrator, After Effects and gouache painting I have developed a diverse practice. My skills with shortcuts and utilising the features that the Adobe programmes offer have bettered through the continuation of this brief. This will result in my creative practice being more efficient in the future as well as having a number of different skills that could be required in a future job.

The Archipelago

Following on from introducing myself to The Archipelago at The Hepworth Christmas Market, I arranged to go to the studio. The experience of arranging and attending the meeting has been highly influential in expanding my confidence in my professional practice. Hearing the progression of Mike's story was inspiring and the main lesson I learned is that passion and confidence is key in success. The importance of experience was also expressed and is when I expressed my interest in a placement/visiting the studio again to see the day to day runnings of how they work. Through discussing this with them further, they have assured me they will be in contact if a time comes available where I will be able to experience their everyday life in the studio.
